Beneath Still Waters is a trim novel that is part murder mystery, part the story of what “shell shock” can do to a man, and part love story–and all written in beautiful, haunting prose. Set in the aftermath of World War II, Beneath Still Waters reveals both the compassion and the hate lurking just under the calm surface of one small southern town. Its sequel, Behind Every Door, takes place a few years after Beneath Still Waters and reveals what happens when a town is too quick to blame the outcasts for every crime while at the same time hiding their own secrets.
